To explore a variety of formal academic speaking situations and more informal academic occasions. Tasks will also focus on raising individual awareness of abilities and on strategies for further developing skills.<\/p>\n<p>The courses listed on this page are <strong>free<\/strong> and are solely for PhD students of the <strong>37th cycle<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting from the 2021\/22 a.y. the <\/span>number and variety<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of courses has increased, as indicated below. Attendance will be over zoom.\u00a0<\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><div class=\"note success  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compulsory ENTRY test &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Registration <\/b>to the entry test (and the course) is open<b> from 16 to 28 November (DEADLINE). <\/b>THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER TEST DATES for the 37th cycle<b>.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_8383135566a0577dfb452a\">Course type and content<\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                        \u00a0<b>Each type of course has a minimum entry level of English.<\/b> It is not possible to attend a course without having first taken the entry test.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><div class=\"note idea  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"><\/span>INTRO TO ACADEMIC ENGLISH<\/strong> (30 academic hours course) &#8211; <strong>Level<\/strong>: <strong>B1\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Basic structures of Academic English: nominalization, recognizing sentence structure, recognising tense usage and appropriacy of lexis and register. Argumentation. Focus on pronunciation and conversation in certain contexts (confidence building). Promotion of passive skills to develop understanding and lexis.<strong><\/div><\/div><\/strong><strong><div class=\"note info  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"> ACADEMIC ENGLISH<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(30 academic hours course) &#8211; <strong>Level: from B1+ to B2 or higher.<\/strong> The courses are divided into upper and lower groups. The same topics are covered in different ways and at different speeds according to the level.\u00a0<\/span><strong>WRITING:<\/strong> writing emails to academic peers, writing abstracts and structuring research papers; the moves, coherence and cohesion, stance. <strong>SPEAKING:<\/strong> presenting research papers at seminars\/conferences, dealing with questions and strategies for interrupting politely, active listening and turn taking.\u00a0<strong><\/div><\/div><\/strong><strong><div class=\"note alert  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>MINI COURSES on specific topics<\/strong> (10 hour mini courses) &#8211; <strong>Level<\/strong>: B2 or higher\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>WRITING 1 <\/strong>Describing data (results, findings)<\/li>\n<li><strong>WRITING 2 <\/strong>Conference abstracts and research article abstracts (exploring the differences between conference and research article abstracts, analysis of structure and language use)<\/li>\n<li><strong>WRITING 3<\/strong> Writing cover letters and research proposals<\/li>\n<li><strong>SPEAKING 1 <\/strong>3-minute thesis competition presentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div><\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_6093036666a0577dfb4608\">Course duration and dates<\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                        <div class=\"note info  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first courses will take place from January to February 2022. The remaining courses will take place during 2nd semester. Some of the mini courses may also take place during the summer period (June\/July 2022). Preference will be given to the 8.30-10.30 and 16.30-18.30 time slots when scheduling. When registering, participants can indicate a preference regarding course type, timetable and period. The CLA will attempt to satisfy requests but the final decision will also be based on the entry test results and on organisational factors.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">[table \u201c42\u201d not found \/]<br \/>\n<\/span>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_12357265966a0577dfb4ece\">Which and how many courses can a person attend?<\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                        <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the level attained during the entry test, it will be possible to attend more than one course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><div class=\"note success  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"><\/span>Participant with a level <strong>lower than a B1+<\/strong>: 1 INTRO to Academic English course + 1 Academic English course (the AEc can also be attended at a later date. The INTRO course is preparatory to the AE course).\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><div class=\"note info  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"> Participant with a <strong>B2 level (lower)<\/strong>: 1 Academic English course + a mini course (the Academic English course must be taken before the mini course).\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><div class=\"note idea  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\">Participant with a <strong>B2 level (upper)<\/strong>: 2 intensive seminars (mini courses) or 1 Academic English course (upper) + 1 mini course.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span> Based on the results of the test, the Language Centre will inform each participant of the course which is most suitable to their level (which may not coincide with that given as a preference in the registration form).<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/span>\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_9252525676a0577dfb4f2f\">Entry test and registration<\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                        <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to evaluate whether each participant\u2019s language level is suitable to attend the courses, an <\/span><b>obligatory entry test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is required. When registering, each participant can indicate a preference regarding the type of course, timetable and period. Based on the test results the Language Centre will inform each participant of the course which is most suitable to their level (which may not coincide with that given as a preference in the registration form). The CLA will do what it can to satisfy requests and preferences but the final decision will be based on the level attained during the entry test and on organisational factors. <\/span><b>It is not possible to attend a course without having taken the entry test.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><div class=\"note idea  no-icon\"><div class=\"note-inner\"><b>TEST STRUCTURE: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test comprises a <\/span><b>written<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>oral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> component.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><b>The written test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which lasts 60 minutes, requires participants to write an email (semi-formal) and a summary\/report (formal\/academic) based on a diagram.\u00a0<\/span><b>The oral test <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves a brief interview, lasting approximately 15 minutes.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><b>Registration to the test (and the course) is open from 16 to 28 November (deadline). The list of the first classes which will start in January\/February 2022 will be available by 22nd Decemmber in the section entitled \u201cclasses\u201d. Timetables will be made available as the classes are published.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_13709729766a0577dfb4f94\">Attendance and certificates<\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                         PhD students who would like to receive a certificate of attendance will need to attend at least 70% of the lessons (21 hours)\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/span>\n                <p class=\"trigger \">\n                    <a href=\"#toggle_12371302156a0577dfb4f9d\">Classes <\/a>\n                <\/p>\n                <div class=\"toggle_container\" style=\"display:none;\">\n                    <div class=\"block\">\n                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The names of the participants admitted to the January\/February 2022 courses will be made available in this section by 22nd December. The timetables will be made available at the same time as the class lists. The names of the participants admitted to the courses following January\/February courses courses will be made available by the same date. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Results, timetable, courses are available at this <a href=\"https:\/\/elearning.unipd.it\/cla\/course\/view.php?id=2634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moodle link<\/a>.
