In the 2013-14 academic year the University Language Centre set up the LEAP project (Learning English for Academic Purposes) with the aim of providing support for lecturers teaching their subjects through the medium of English.
The constant increase of international students and an increasingly wide range of study courses in English have made clear the need for extensive specialized linguistic support aimed at all University staff. These are the reasons behind the aCLAim – Academic Language for Internationalization and Multilingualism – project, a natural continuation of the LEAP project.
Every year the project provides various types of support:
Teaching and communicating in English course
30-hour traditional course.
Objectives: to help participants to develop their language and communication skills in order to teach their subject effectively in English, as well as to provide the tools with which to explore and experiment with different teaching methods and approaches.
Lecturer Support Service
Personalised support service, providing an opportunity for lecturers to discuss their needs and potential concerns regarding teaching in English and receive advice and feedback from the CLA’s English language learning experts.
Short courses
Intensive courses of 10 academic hours aimed at Unipd professors on specific EMI topics.
Conversation sessions
Short cycles of Conversation Sessions in English.
Objectives: to provide participants with tools to gain confidence in spoken language even in non-academic contexts and to deal more fluently with ‘informal’ situations of dialogue with international colleagues.
The project is open exclusively to lecturers at the University of Padova who hold courses in English.
