A partire dal mese di gennaio 2015, il CLA organizzerà dei brevi workshop interattivi a cadenza bimensile aperti ad un massimo di 20 docenti dell’Università di Padova che insegnano in lingua inglese. I workshop sono organizzati nell’ambito del progetto LEAP2.
- pronuncia;
- presentazione orale;
- stimolare l’interazione in classe;
- stili di apprendimento e di insegnamento;
- comunicazione informale in classe (small talk, aneddoti , humor, domande);
- valutazione degli studenti;
- esperienze di English-Medium Instruction;
- tecnologie per l’internazionalizzazione: MOOCs e scambi virtuali;
- risorse per l’apprendimento linguistico.
Workshops su altre tematiche potranno essere organizzati su richiesta di gruppi di partecipanti.
L’accesso seguirà una logica “first come, first served” fino a esaurimento posti. Se il numero di iscritti ad un workshop è superiore alla capienza complessiva di 20 partecipanti, il CLA provvederà a organizzare un incontro aggiuntivo.In caso di chiusura anticipata liste per esaurimento posti è possibile iscriversi ad una waiting list. Nel caso si rendessero disponibili dei posti verrà inviata una comunicazione personale per email secondo l’ordine di arrivo delle domande.

22 Maggio 2015: Informal Communication Strategies
Abstract:
It has been remarked that teaching their subject through English can turn ‘good lecturers into bad communicators’ (Tange, 2010). In order to avoid this, it is necessary for lecturers to use a wide range of language in both formal and informal registers. There is a danger that lecturers focus too much on the formal, technical language of their field and neglect the questions, responses, anecdotes and humour that make them good communicators in their mother tongue. This can lead to the phenomenon of the ‘reduced personality’ whereby a lecturer is unable to be the person he/she normally is in the classroom. In this workshop, we will look at some differences between formal and informal language and when each may be appropriate in a lecture. We will also look at how to plan for some of these informal usages as well as strategies to help with those times that cannot be planned. You will have the opportunity to practices several of these strategies as well as to ask questions and discuss the issues raised.

10 Aprile 2015: It’s not just a matter of translating your slides! A look at important aspects of EMI
Abstract: The challenges posed by lecturing through English to non-English speaking students are often underestimated by lecturers or their institutions. In general, concerns tend to focus on purely linguistic issues with other more communicative/didactic issues relegated to second place or not considered at all. Students themselves are very conscious of this, frequently rating lecturers’ methodological abilities far higher than merely linguistic competence. But what does this actually mean? In this workshop, we would like to include, but go beyond, the purely linguistic when considering aspects of communication and didactics that contribute to successful EMI, e.g. cohesion, intercultural transparency and an awareness of changes in the role of the teacher. The workshop will be interactive, allowing time for input, questions and discussion.

27 Marzo 2015: Interactive Lecturing through the Medium of English
Abstract: The aim of this workshop is (a) to raise participants’ awareness about the role interaction and questions can play when lecturing in English and (b) to provide participants with some activation tasks for lecturing
in English. Participants will work individually to reflect on their lectures and they will work in groups on activation tasks for lectures.

13 Marzo 2015: Limiting Miscommunication in the International English-Taught Classroom
Abstract: The aim of this workshop is (a) to raise participants’ awareness to the impact of the local (academic) culture on their teaching in English, (b) to identify sources of potential miscommunication in the classroom, and (c) to develop practical strategies how to limit miscommunication in the first place.

Abstract: “This 2-day workshop of 2+ hours each will focus on your individual needs. You will be given the tools to understand pronunciation differences and work toward your own pronunciation target.
We will go over problematic vowels and consonants and focus on final consonants, linking, stress and intonation. You will have the opportunity to practice pronunciation during and after the workshop”.
